Walkers, the nation’s favourite crisp company, is making sure that every cloud has a silver lining this autumn by giving out heaps of cash whenever the heavens open.

By visiting Walkers.co.uk, in the first promotion of its kind, the weather-obsessed British public can predict when and where in the UK and Ireland the rain will fall, and every time they get it right – they’ll win a tenner!

“Walkers loves the rain, as it’s good for the British potatoes we use to make our crisps,” said Miranda Sambles, Marketing Director for Walkers. “The Brits love talking about the weather and know a thing or two about it, so we wanted to put this national pastime to good use and turn the rain into a positive. Now, instead of complaining about the rain, people will be hoping for a shower so they can win £10 every day! And, knowing the British weather, we imagine there’ll be plenty of chances to win.”

Walkers has launched an easy-to-use interactive British weather map at Walkers.co.uk and divided the country into 21,271 grid squares available daily. Each day, visitors can choose in which squares across the whole country they think it will rain – it’s not just for weather experts! Spots can be claimed up to 24 hours in advance, so a spot on a Wednesday can be claimed up until 7.59am on Tuesday, the day before. Every single area will be officially assessed to see whether it’s rained, as verified by data provided by the Met Office, so there will be lots of opportunities to win!

Director of Forecasting at the Met Office, Rob Varley, said, “On average rain falls on 154 days a year across the UK and the Met Office is amongst the best in the world at forecasting. Our experts will be using technology, such as rainfall radar to confirm the public’s choices. To increase chances of winning players can check out our forecasts at metoffice.gov.uk.”

And if that wasn’t enough, when it does rain there will be plenty to keep people busy, as Walkers is also giving out savings for a fantastic range of activities, from pub meals and money-off DVDs, to half-price tickets for top attractions like Madame Tussauds, Sea Life Centres and Legoland, to name just a few, so there’s no need to splash out.

The website is open from 13th September and will close on 31st March 2011. The first day valid for ‘predictor plays’ is 1st October and the last is 16th November 2010.
