Volvo FM launched with new 11-litre engine

16th June 2008 Print
Volvo FM launched with new 11-litre engine Volvo has developed a completely new 11-litre engine for the tractor version of the Volvo FM. Its load capacity makes it ideal for weight-sensitive applications such as tanker and bulk transport in a move to attract customers to a new segment where Volvo sees growth potential.

“We want the 11-litre version of the Volvo FM to be perceived as the ideal truck in weight-sensitive segments. It combines a powerful driveline, high driver comfort and optimum load capacity and is designed to attract customers in an area where we see strong expansion potential,” says Christer Pehrsson, Business Area Manager at Volvo Trucks.

Light weight and high performance
The new 11-litre engine is about 140 kgs lighter than the larger 13-litre D13 engine. This allows for high load capacity. The D11 engine also offers high performance and fuel efficiency.

“Our tests show excellent results in terms of both fuel consumption and performance. We believe it will be a leader in its segment and an attractive solution for regional transports,” says Christer Pehrsson.

Two power levels
The D11 engine is designed to meet both Euro 4 and forthcoming Euro 5 standards with the help of SCR exhaust gas treatment. It will be launched in two versions:

390hp and torque of 1880 Nm
430hp and torque of 2100 Nm

The engine provides a high power output at both low and high engine revs. Its economy range is between 1,050 and 1500 rpm, and 95 percent of the maximum torque is available within this range.

“The 11-litre engine is exceptionally strong and a real joy to drive,” says Mats Franzén, Engine Manager at Product Strategy and Planning at Volvo Trucks. “In addition, we’ve combined it with our automated I-Shift gearbox, which is both comfortable to handle and fuel-efficient.”

Modern design and new interior
The 11-litre Volvo FM has the same design as the rest of the FM range. It has an upgraded exterior with, new sun visors, ‘Globetrotter’ sign and the option of new headlamps. The cab interior has been completely redesigned to provide optimum conditions for safe driving and flexible storage. Additionally, Volvo’s low entrance steps offer increased convenience for drivers who can get in and out of the cab many times a day.

The Volvo FM is also offered with a new Globetrotter LXL cab. The new cab is designed to offer even more space and extra comfort, when compared with the existing Volvo FM Globetrotter cab, as it offers an additional 150mm headroom.

The Volvo FM with 11-litre engine is available as either a 4x2 or a 6x2 pusher axle tractor. It has a permitted gross combination weight of 40 - 44 tonnes and is available ADR-approved for transporting hazardous goods.
